This is Brittany Molina, a 21-year-old accounting major at Brigham Young University. As she was walking across the BYU campus on Valentine’s Day, a young man rushed up to her, handed her a hand written note, and then disappeared back into the throng of students. The text of his letter read thusly:

“You may want to consider that what you’re wearing has a negative effect on men (and women) around you. Many people come to this university because they feel safe, morally as well as physically, here. They expect others to abide by the Honor Code that we all agreed on. Please consider your commitment to the Honor Code (which you agreed to) when dressing each day. Thank you.”

The above picture is of the offending outfit in question. So yeah, I guess that is where things are at in the mythical land of BYU. FUN!

Because I live a mere 45 minutes north of Provo, UT, you may not be surprised to find out that many of my relatives and fellow high school graduates are BYU students. Even my dad got his Master’s there. Needless to say, being raised in a Mormon household is pretty trippy. It’s strange being taught that you have to start repenting for your sins starting at age 8, lest you be smitten down and cast into Hell. It’s weird being a young girl and believing that wearing shirts that expose too much of the arm or shoulder are evil, and that drinking coffee is a hideous sin. My years as a young Mormon were the trippiest years of my life, and I am happy to have broken free of that belief system. It is far behind me now.
BYU is a trip. Mormonism is a trip. I do not hesitate to say so, even though I risk offending people. It’s all a giant trip.
P.S. Did you know BYU students aren’t allowed to wear open-toed shoes, and that the male students there can’t grow beards or wear their hair too long? BYU = party central!
